18 must-see London exhibitions during Frieze Week

Fiona McKenzie Johnston, House & Garden, 7 October 2022

Frieze London and Frieze Masters are set to open in London on October 10, but there’s plenty more for art lovers to see beyond the main fairs…

Dindga McCannon at Pippy Houldsworth Gallery

The first European solo exhibition of the Philadelphia-based artist brings together a wide range of works from Dindga McCannon’s 50-year career, and spans textiles, quilts, prints, and sculpture that focus on and celebrate the histories of black women. Dindga joined several activict groups in the early 1960s, leading her to join the pre-eminent Weusi Artist Collective; together with Faith Ringgold and Kay Brown, she later formed Where We At Black Women Artists Inc. collective, pioneering a new form of community-based arts education. The show will demonstrate the ways in which Dindga’s work excavates the American oppression of black communities and individuals, and honours pioneering figures such as Sojourner Truth and Harriet Tubman. 11 October – 12 November
