Following her inclusion in The Whitney Biennial 2024: Even Better Than the Real Thing, Mary Kelly's Lacunae (2023) has been acquired by The Whitney Museum of American Art.
Mary Kelly's ‘Lacunae’ is the first section of a new six-part body of work that combines a decade of Kelly’s calendars, 2012-2021, with drawings in ash on vellum. Her age juxtaposed with those of the deceased suggests an imaginary countdown, replayed as the gaps accumulate and the activity of real time fades. She describes how the new work loops back to Post-Partum Document as a kind of bookend to her life’s work and as a witness to the evolving politics of her generation of feminists.
Kelly has previously been included in the 1991 and 2004 editions of the Whitney Biennial.
