Zoë Buckman exhibited at the Norton Museum of Art

Zoë Buckman's 'like home like something' is currently on view at the Norton Museum of Art, FL, in their group exhibition, 'Dance Lightly: Artists on Boxing'. The show runs until 25 March 2024

The exhibition showcases artworks that directly reference the sport, as well as scenes of the intimate moments surrounding a fight. The title is culled from a poem by Gabriele Tinti — a rhythmed oration from the imagined perspective of the ancient Greek sculpture, Seated Boxer, as the bronze fighter moves through the play-by-play of a boxing match.

In her practice, Zoë works with objects and mediums symbolically associated with gender. Whilst her oft-adopted boxing gloves hint at a bellicose masculinity, the artist also incorporates vintage fabrics into her work, from lingerie to dishcloths and table linen. These textiles, traditionally used and decorated by women, recall an intimacy with the body and a proximity to the domestic space.

Zoë Buckman (b. 1985, London, UK) lives and works in Brooklyn, NY. She studied at the International Centre of Photography (ICP), NY, and was awarded an Art Matters Grant in 2017.  She is also currently included in Get in the Game, a group exhibition at the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, CA, later travelling to Crystal Bridges, Bentonville, AR; and Perez Art Museum, Miami, FL; and 'Daffodils Baptized In Butter', The Arts Club, London.
