Pippy Houldsworth Gallery is delighted to announce Qualeasha Wood's first institutional solo exhibition code_anima opening on Friday 24 May 2024 at the Harvey B. Gantt Center for African-American Arts + Culture. Curated by Leandra-Juliet Kelley, the exhibition explores identity, physical and digital boundaries, and the process of individuation through analysis of complex and socially accepted paradoxes.
"code_anima delves into the complexities of identity, expectation, and erasure through the prisms of race, gender, and sexuality. This exhibition is a critical examination of the roles historically ascribed to Black women, which demand both a resolution to systemic issues and the simultaneous stripping of personal autonomy and agency."
- Qualeasha Wood
Wood's work is also currently on view at Brooklyn Museum, The Spelman College Museum of Fine Art, and The Art Institute of Chicago, which has recently acquired a work by Wood for its permanent collection.
