It is with great sadness that Pippy Houldsworth Gallery announces the death of our beloved Jacqueline de Jong, at age 85 in Amsterdam, following a short illness.
For over sixty years, Jacqueline was at the forefront of the European avant-garde, renowned for her raw and surrealistic expressions of contemporary life. Her experimental practice, which encompassed not only painting but also printmaking, sculpture, drawing, jewellery and publishing, has been an inspiration to generations of artists, and her achievements have been recognised with myriad accolades, awards and exhibitions. In recent years, Jacqueline was unflagging in her artistic output, continuing to paint vigorously and returning to a visual language redolent of the earliest years of her career.
Our heartfelt thoughts are with her brother Philip and close friends, of whom she had many. All of us at Pippy Houldsworth Gallery will miss Jacqueline for her fearless approach to life and art, her sense of humour, and her unfailing joie de vivre, which remained with her to the end.
